Why Oxygen is Vital for Vibrant Skin
Oxygen and your body. How important oxygen is for the health of your skin.

Did you know that a person can live three weeks or more without food and about three days without water, but only about ten minutes without oxygen?
This shows you just how important this single element is for life in general, and also for the healthy LIFE of your skin!
Oxygen and Your Body
To dive a little deeper into the importance of O2, let's zero in on possibly the most important body of research on the subject. Dr. Otto Warburg discovered how quickly the body can descend into a state of life-threatening disease and decay simply because of a lack of oxygen. His studies regarding “anaerobic” environments (i.e. internal environments that lack oxygen) and cancer helped him win a Nobel Prize in the 1930’s.
"...the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation." (1)
Scientists and doctors have known for almost 100 years that oxygen really is the “breath of life,” not just for your skin but for your whole body! (2) Now you know this secret too!
What Can Cause a Low Oxygen State?
Oxygen is so important for sustaining life that the body constantly makes sure you have enough of it automatically. You don’t necessarily have to think about taking your next breath – you just do. This is a very good thing since, according to the Canadian Lung Association, the average person breathes in and out about 22,000 times every single day! (3)
If oxygen is so essential that our bodies make sure we have enough of it at all times, how can we become oxygen-deprived?
I can sum up the answer to this very good question in one word: toxins. Toxic exposure is going to happen to all of us in today’s world; we can’t get around it. However, the trick to staying healthy is to make sure that the vast majority of these toxins either stay out of our bodies or pass through our bodies very quickly.
Here are a few lifestyle-related situations that can lead to toxic buildup as well as an “anaerobic” (ie low oxygen) environment in the blood and in the body as a whole:
- Eating too much sugar and/or processed foods;
- Being chronically stressed;
- Being exposed to pollutants in the water, soil, and air;
- Being exposed to carcinogens, such as those in commercial sundry products, commercial cleaning products, plastics, new cars, appliances, toys or flooring.
Toxic buildup caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and an unhealthy external environment can cause low oxygen levels even at the cellular level. When this happens, changes can take place in the bloodstream, especially within red blood cells. Clumping causes blood flow to slow down. In low-oxygen internal environments, other mechanisms begin to break down as well. Specific enzymes whose job it is to convert oxygen to energy stop working and can become damaged, leading to (as Dr. Warburg discovered) fermentation and disease.
More Oxygen Equals More Health (Including Healthy Skin): Four Tips
Hypoxemia is the technical term for low oxygen levels in the blood. This condition, if not corrected quickly, can also cause the breakdown of healthy skin mechanisms, skin ulceration, and more. (4) That’s the bad news. The good news is that, when it comes to oxygen, there are so many things you can do to replenish it and start breathing in LIFE again! Here are some tips:
#1 Focus on your breath! One of the easiest ways to encourage oxygenation (and also help your body to detox) is to simply focus on healthy breathing, as well as specific breathing techniques designed to clear the mind and heal the body.
When we are stressed out, we often tend to breathe with our mouth and/or breathe in and out from our upper chest. Whenever you can remember throughout your day (ideally several times per day), practice sitting up straight and breathing from the belly instead of the chest. Taking low, slow breaths in this way can do a lot to lower those stress responses as well. “Box breathing” and “5-7-8 breathing” or two more specific techniques to oxygenate, clear the mind, lower stress, and encourage detoxification in the respiratory tract and lungs.
#2 Move your body. Exercise is a must-do for increasing blood oxygen levels, improving circulation, and detoxing all the “bad stuff” that can slow blood flow down; remember that the slower the blood flow, the lower the oxygen! A major study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that regular exercise helped to decrease overall mortality by roughly 35%. Wow! (5)
What’s more, cardiovascular exercise provides a great boost for the skin. Ever wonder why your skin seems to have that “glow” after a workout? The reason is increased circulation and, you guessed it, increased oxygen!
#3 Eat oxygen-encouraging food. What does it mean to eat a diet that encourages higher oxygen levels in the body? Lots of green, leafy vegetables should be what’s on the menu for overall health, greater detoxification, and higher blood oxygen levels in general. Green vegetables (especially dark green ones) contain chlorophyll, which is a natural blood purifier. They also contain “antioxidant, antimutagenic, antigenotoxic, anti-cancer, and anti-obesogenic” properties, according to a 2023 report published in the journal Molecules. (6)
Some veggies that are super high in chlorophyll include alfalfa sprouts, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, kale, parsley, and spinach. Wheat grass is also a great source of chlorophyll and is usually consumed as a “wheatgrass shot.”
#4 Nourish your skin with oxygen too! Just like your body loves oxygen internally, so does your skin. You can “feed” your skin oxygen-rich phytonutrients via the skincare products you choose.
What Makes Breath of Life Oxygen Face Serum So Great for Your Skin?
By now, I hope you are convinced of all the amazing goodness that can happen in your body when you give it the rich, healing oxygen that it needs! When it comes to the best luxury skincare formula for getting this job done, there is nothing that compares to the CHARLÍS Breath of Life Oxygen Serum! Here are a few reasons why:
ORGANIC CALENDULA OFFICINALIS FLOWER EXTRACT- Calendula, or “pot marigold,” is actually an antioxidant powerhouse that can protect cells from free radical damage in real time. This means 100% organic, sustainably produced extract from the calendula plant can help foster aerobic (i.e., oxygen-rich) environments within skin cells. This helps with lowering inflammation and fighting against infection. Studies show that calendula can help wounds heal faster, specifically by encouraging increased blood flow and oxygen in the area. Its effects have also proved extremely helpful for common skin-related conditions like dermatitis and eczema.
COENZYME Q10- Also known as ubiquinone (or simply “CoQ10”), coenzyme Q10 can also have significant antioxidant effects when applied topically to the skin. It is extremely energizing and has been shown in studies to slow down deterioration in the skin caused by age as well as sun exposure.
ORGANIC CITRUS PARADISI PEEL OIL - Citrus Paradisi, or grapefruit, peel oil is a natural source of very oxygenating, protective substances known as AHAs, or alpha hydroxy acids. In one study, a 25% increase in skin thickness was evident after about 6 months of application. According to the study, “treatment with AHAs produced significant reversal of epidermal and dermal markers of photoaging.”
Especially for aging skin as well as those with acne, the invigorating effects of Citrus Paradisi with naturally-occurring AHAs are a must. (7)
