Ahhh, the mango - that yummy, succulent fruit that is synonymous with tropical paradise, beach days, and frozen concoctions.
And, surprisingly, healthy skin too!
Organic Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Oil is a little-known secret for beautifully looking skin that can be found exclusively inside the CHARLÍS Coconut Island Bliss Body Butter.
Find out why we decided to include Mangifera Indica in this brand-new formula. I guarantee you will never look at a mango the same way again!
The Mighty Mango
Mango is one of the most popular fruits out there- and not just in tropical regions where it grows. These days it is actually cultivated in over 100 countries and available globally for those craving its tangy, refreshing sweetness.
It is an ancient fruit as well. Technically it is called a “drupe” or “stone” fruit because of the large pit or seed in the middle. In its native India (as well as in parts of Southeast Asia), it has been cultivated for over 4,000 years. Many cultures call it the “king of fruits.” Today, there are hundreds of different types, colors, and sizes of mango as well.
Besides its taste - which is unique and amazing - mangoes are actually chock full of phytonutrients and antioxidants as well as a ton of essential vitamins and minerals. According to data put out by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), one cup of mango contains close to 20% of the body’s recommended daily value (DV) of both copper and folate and 10-15% DVs of vitamins B6, A, and E. (1)
The most impressive stat on mangos, however, is in their vitamin C content. Just 8 ounces of raw mango contain a whopping 67% DV for this essential nutrient. Getting enough vitamin C every day can significantly help boost your immune system, promote cell healing and growth, and increase nutrient absorption.
Mangos are also high in a number of antioxidant phytonutrients, including catechins and anthocyanins. And it is the source for an incredibly healing phytonutrient called mangiferin. Studies show that magniferin is not only anti-inflammatory and immune boosting, but can also balance triglyceride levels, increase the bioavailability of fatty acids, and protect the brain.
Studies such as a 2021 investigation conducted by researchers at DIT University in Dehradun, India, have found that mango can be neuroprotective against Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ischemia. (2) Other reports point to its benefits against the most common lifestyle-related diseases. A 2017 report found that mangiferin inhibited activation of particular pathways involved in cancer tumor growth. (3)
All this definitely makes mango a “must add” to your overall disease-prevention toolkit! Of course, mango’s high antioxidant, high anti-inflammatory, and high vitamin C content are also reasons why it can be so beneficial for skin as well.
Let’s dive in now to find out why!
Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Oil: Vitamin C-Rich Goodness for Skin
We made the exciting choice to include all organic Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Oil in our new CHARLÍS Coconut Island Bliss Body Butter for not just one reason - but for many! First, as you may have guessed, is its vitamin C content.
If there is one vitamin that healthy skin simply cannot live without, it is C! Vitamin C is the substance that is necessary for collagen production. It is also a powerful antioxidant for the skin as well.
Vitamin C is also a nutrient, as I mentioned earlier, that mangos have in spades. Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Oil is made from mango seeds or kernels. This means that the oil, as the final product, will inevitably have even higher concentrations of all the good stuff. Think of the seeds of any plant as tiny, little packets of concentrated nutrients ready to burst out into the world - first as sprouts and then as actual plants (and, in this case, as magnificent mango trees ripe with luscious fruit).
The vitamin C content in organic Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Oil makes the CHARLÍS Coconut Island Bliss Body Butter a must-use for summer sun protection. This is especially true since this oil has not only vitamin C but also vitamins E and A, creating a powerful triad of protection against not only the UV rays of the sun but also other environmental pollutants as well.
Mangiferin
Now let’s talk about the substance called mangiferin. We already learned about the truly incredible benefits this natural polyphenolic compound can have for disease prevention in general. But wait until I tell you what it can do for skin!
Studies have confirmed that super high antioxidant mangiferin has the ability to penetrate deep into both the epidermis and the dermis. This can provide an extra layer of incredible protection from environmental exposure. But that is not all. A study conducted by researchers at the Medical University of Gdansk in Gdansk, Poland found that, once in the deeper layers of the skin, mangiferin has the ability to inhibit key enzymatic mechanisms that can cause the degradation of both collagen and elastin. This inhibition makes it a powerful ally in skin cell healing and regeneration as well as a potent anti-aging substance overall. (4)
It comes as no surprise that mangiferin, which has been shown to inhibit breast and colon cancer tumor growth, can also suppress skin cancer growth as well. According to research conducted at the University of Minnesota and Cornell University, this time the healing happens via a mangiferin metabolite called norathyriol. (5)
As if all that isn’t enough, organic mango fruit oil has also been shown to work as an occlusive agent for the skin. While many substances can provide deep moisturizing by attracting moisture or providing direct hydration, other phytonutrients play a special role in hydration as “occlusives.” Occlusives help keep moisture in by creating a protective barrier on the skin’s surface.
Finally, because of its moisture-locking, anti-inflammatory, and cell rejuvenating effects, Organic Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Oil may play a beneficial role for those with psoriasis. A 2020 Spanish report emphasized the potential of mangiferin “for the treatment of psoriasis or other skin disorders.” (6)
